Pilates is a form of exercise named after its creator Joseph Pilates who developed the repertoire in the 1920s. Pilates originally called his invention 'Contrology' to reflect his method as the art of controlled movements. It consists of low impact, strengthening, lengthening and endurance exercises which emphasize postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance.
Neutral spine refers to the optimal alignment of the spine. We have 4 curves in the spine, 2 lordodic curves in the cervical and lumbar as well as two kyphotic curves in the thoracic and sacrum. The goal is to maintain the integrity of the curves especially when performing core stability exercises.
The core is the symbiosis of muscles that wrap around our centre of mass. This includes the abdominals, diaphragm, pelvic floor and multifidus. It acts as a musculature bridge between the upper and lower extremities in order to control and stabilize the body. A strong core is integral to balance and adaptability.
